Past Events 2011
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.  Press conference on November 25 and concert November 26.
A message from MamaKoatl, who each year leads us in this important day's events and ritual:

Dear Sisters, wishing you all kinds of success, I write to ask your presence and energy for this work, we carry out year after year in the City of San Francisco.

On Friday the 25th, we will have the press conference, on the sidewalk in front of the lobby at Mission Cultural Center, or in the lobby. The program runs from noon to 2 pm. Mexican artist Hersalia Cantoral will create an altar/installation piece in honor of Marisela Escobedo, a wind ensemble would play a song in her memory and that is how we would start. Three themes: First, sexual slavery in the Bay Area, the fact that there is nothing in the school curriculum or civic calendar to address the issue of violence against women and girls, and propose a course of action for SFSUD. Second, we are denouncing the violence inherent in the "Thanksgiving" "holiday"mythology and thirdly we will adress institutional, political violence. We are inviting three political asylum participants, from Colombia, Mexico and Guatemala. They will share their experiences. This year we are holding our concert under the theme Guardianas de la Vida on November 26.

BACORR.org for the latest action opportunity and save the date for our big event January 21, 2012!  There are many fun and important events leading up to January 21, so please stay in touch!

PAST EVENTS - 2011

WE ARE ONE!  RESPECT OUR RIGHTS RALLY!
The protests in Wisconsin changed the game in America when it comes to workers' rights and
standing up for the American Dream.

There's new energy out there and the entire labor movement has come together to keep the
momentum going by calling for an unprecedented day of solidarity this Monday, April 4—
the anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination.

Progressives nationwide have stood up to join with the labor movement in overwhelming numbers.
Already nearly 1000 solidarity events including rallies, teach-ins, work site discussions, vigils, faith
events, and more are planned for the next few days.

The April 4 day of action is going to be huge, and the bigger the crowd at each event the better.

Can you join in? Click here to sign up for an event in your area:

http://www.moveon.org/r?r=207320&id=26757-18279345-5HTux7x&t=4

This is our chance to show the nation that the spirit of the working people who rose up in Wisconsin
is only spreading, growing, and getting stronger—but the day of the events, April 4, is also
significant itself.

It's the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis 43 years ago. Dr. King
was in Memphis to stand in solidarity with striking sanitation workers who were demanding their
rights and their chance to live out the American Dream. And this week's events, under the shared
name "We Are One," are our chance to stand up for the very same rights and the same American
Dream. It is a grassroots effort being led by a broad coalition of unions and progressive allies
committed to realizing Dr. King's goal of economic justice for all.

PAST EVENTS -- 2010

Hoo Wants a Kids' Menu?

Hoo Wants a Kids' Menu? If you have 30 minutes to help NOW speak up about normalized sexism, please stand with us at noon in San Francisco 11/23/2010!

Hoo wants to see the kids’ menu? At noon on Tuesday, November 23rd on the steps of the San Francisco City Hall, the California chapter of the National Organization for Women announces a national action to be acted upon locally everywhere there is a Hooters Restaurant serving and marketing to children. NOW has chosen the annual ratify CEDAW event to announce the launch of the Hoo Wants a Kids' Menu task force because the culture of discrimination begins during childhood.

In the late 90’s, Hooter’s Inc. told the EEOC that their main function is not providing food, rather their executives characterized Hooter’s Restaurants as primarily a provider of, "vicarious sexual entertainment". Despite this, Hooters advertises themselves as a family restaurant where kids eat free on Tuesdays. They locate themselves in shopping malls and near child-oriented stores. They have high chairs, booster seats and kids' menus. They sell child sized t-shirts with "Future Hooters Girl" printed across the front.

Hooters cannot have it both ways. Hooters requires the young, pretty women they hire to wear sexually provocative uniforms and to sign a release against what would otherwise be considered a hostile work environment of blatant sexual innuendo, commentary and jokes. If they can claim to the EEOC that they should be allowed to discriminate in hiring because they are a provider of “vicarious sexual entertainment” rather than a restaurant, then they should not be allowed to market to children and families, thus exposing children to a sexualized atmosphere.

"Marketing to young children and creating a family restaurant atmosphere amounts to the legalization and normalization of sexual discrimination and a hostile work environment," says Patty Bellasalma, president of the California chapter of NOW. "Every local county or city with a Hooters should consider a ban on marketing sexual entertainment to minors, and require that sexual entertainment businesses check IDs at the door."

Kid’s can’t always choose where they are taken for a meal, let’s make good choices for future generations. Let’s educate kids about gender equality! Millions of child meals have been served up by Hooter's Restaurants. Demand a ban serving minors in establishments of "vicarious sexual entertainment".

SF Area Chapter of the National Organization for Women invites you and/or young women you may know to a fun, free, feminist event. Please forward this invite on to all who may be interested! Music, knowledge, healthy snacks and sisterhood...please join us!

This free About Face workshop equips women and girls with tools to understand and resist harmful media messages that affect their self-esteem and body image.

Everywhere girls and women look, they see messages about their bodies and their selves, telling them they must be tall, blonde, tan, and sexually available. In fact, a woman can rarely separate her feelings about her physical body from her self-worth, especially in our media-saturated society. And the messages even the youngest girls are seeing and hearing are skewed, sexualized, and sexist.

These messages -- part of what About-Face calls the "toxic media environment" -- are contributing to a host of girls' and women's ills, including low self-esteem, depression, persistent anxiety over weight and appearance, extremely unhealthy diets and exercise regimens, and eating disorders. All of these problems interfere with a woman's ability to function to the best of her abilities.

SFNOW thanks cohosts About-Face.org, SFRockSchool.com and herchurch.org for this brilliant opportunity for Bay Area girl and young women! Please invite your friends! RSVP recommended, space is limited.

PAST EVENTS
Sunday January 10, 2010
SFNOW Supports WOW (Women of the Wall).

Jewish women and men will conduct a prayer service at Union Square, San Francisco CA on Sunday January 10, 2010 wearing Jewish prayer shawls in support of the woman who was arrested in the Western Wall in Jerusalem last November for the "crime" of praying while wearing a "tallit" or Jewish prayer shawl. Powerful Jewish Orthodox groups in Israel curretnly prevent women from praying at the Western Wall while wearing Jewish ritual objects, claiming that these object are reserved for men. However, no Jewish law exists which bans women from using them.

This is one of the many prayer services that will take place in town squares across the nation.

You don't have to be Jewish to show your support for Jewish women. Please turn out to support woman being treated with dignity while they exercise their right to pray in traditional ritual attire.

January 22, 2010:

Activist opportunity!
Press Conference: Coalition for Reproductive Freedom! Show the PRESS where you stand this Friday, January 22, 2010 at 11:00 for ONLY one hour in front of the Women's Building! Busloads of protestors are arriving this Friday from far and wide to shake their scary signs and demand an end to Roe and legalized abortion. WE NEED YOUR PRESENCE. We have a sign for you to hold, but feel free to bring your own. The sad irony: their funders are also opposed to sex education, birth control, day after contraception and funding Planned Parenthood. Abortion does not exist in a vacuum -- reproductive freedom is a fundamental aspect of women's equality. Mass media glamorizes teen pregnancy at the same time as abstinence only education strategies have deprived youth of fundamental information about their own bodies. Even in San Francisco, kids are being denied basic knowledge -- teens who don't know how their ovaries function and that emergency contraception is available at the drug store next door. Please show up this Friday and help us stand united for reproductive freedom.
